How does A water softener work?
This device functions by substituting ions in hard water with another set of ions, resulting in softened water. It typically works by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions, which are much less likely to form scale deposits. To achieve this, the water is passed through a resin bed filled with tiny resin beads, which contain sodium ions. The exchanged ions are then flushed away with the concentrated brine solution. This process ultimately reduces the hardness of the water supply.
The process of water softening involves utilizing “ion exchange” to eliminate minerals that are dissolved in hard water, for instance, calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese.
A filter is not able to capture these minerals, so a molecular reaction is essential. Water softeners contain resin beads that trap sodium, and as the hard water passes through the beads, the hard water minerals are exchanged for sodium. The minerals are kept in the softener and only a minor quantity of sodium flows out with the softened water.
